exterior of 555 West End Ave555 West End Ave is an exclusive landmark Beaux Arts building on the Upper West Side of Manhattan with 13 ultra-high-end condominium residences priced up to $18 million. Cary Tamarkin’s vision comes to life after the converted Boys High School was transformed into the masterpiece condominium it has become today. Keeping many turn-of-the-century details, Cary incorporated contemporary elements and classic traditional style perfectly suited for its Upper West Side location. This magnificent project is landmarked for its pristine red brick and limestone façade to support a collection of spacious apartments, condos, penthouses and large townhomes. Towering ceilings, oversized windows, and classic architectural elements inspired the design calling for the finest products to be sourced for reconstruction.

When it came to selecting hardwood flooring for the project, only the finest materials would be used. Custom tailored hardwood flooring planks were hand selected and custom milled to meet the highest standards in the industry. Direct Flooring was tasked for the installation of the hardwood floors as well as the floor remediation (floor leveling) in each area to meet the strictest of tolerances.

Manny Salgado from Direct Flooring revealed, “This is our third project in NYC for Cary Tamarkin. We understand the level of quality required for the renovation, so each plank of flooring was specially milled, and each plank hand selected for the project”.

A 2 ¼” rift and quartered character white oak was used for 555 West End Ave. Going back to the roots of original architecture, the hardwood selection highlights the different character of the wood graining and is more stable than other hardwoods. “The Appalachian white oak we used at 555 West End Ave. is a superior grade hardwood and expands and contracts at a lesser rate than other woods,” explained Manny.

What is Rift and Quartered Sawn?

Logs are cut with the grains intersecting the face of the board at an approximate 60-degree angle. The log is sawn into four quarters and each quarter of the log is sawn perpendicular to the growth rings at an angle, therefore being named rift and quartered.

Direct Flooring worked directly with the design team and obtained the exclusive 2 ¼” Appalachian White Oak from Conway Hardwood. Conway Hardwood is known for their hardwood flooring and this project was perfectly suited for their special touch and unrivaled quality. Conway is also known for hand selected hardwood and millwork of the highest standards in the flooring industry.
